Once you've obtained your naturalisation, you are now a British citizen. This means you can now get a British passport. Hurray!

How do I apply?

There is an online form to complete that will be the first step on your journey towards obtaining a passport. If you are also applying for your family, it can all be done in one place. Remember, you will need a lot of the paperwork you already provided for your ILR and naturalisation, so keep them handy!

How long will it take?

There is a page on the gov.uk website that gives a general idea of the wait time, but expect at least 3 weeks. I got my passport in less than a week, so there is no hard and fast rule about it having to follow the timeline given online. Remember that the processing time starts from when the passport office receives any and all documents you are asked to submit.

Unfortunately, if it is your first passport, you are not eligible to use the fast track service. The good news is you can use it for subsequent applications. Follow this link to track your application once you've submitted all your paperwork.

How much will it cost?

These are the fees for obtaining a passport from the gov.uk website:

Current fees as of 2025

As most of us typically apply online, you can pay via debit or credit card. There are options to pay by cash, check, or postal order if you pay using the paper form or submitting online through the post office.

All of your documents will be sent separately from your passport via a normal second class post. This will be at no additional charge to you. If you wish to have them returned using a tracked service, you have the option to arrange and pay for this.

Can I have dual citizenship?

This is more of a question to be asked from your native citizenship. If your main passport does not allow dual citizenship, you can remain on an ILR as long as you continue to meet the rules related to it. If, however, you feel you would rather give up your original citizenship in order to obtain a British passport, that is something you would need to look into with your home country. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to know what citizenship you can and cannot hold.

So congrats again! You now have a British passport and are free to move about the world- currently British citizens have visa-free or on-arrival visa access to 190 countries and territories! Where will you visit first?
